The historical marker is a very nice statue and is worth stopping to take a picture, but if you are planning to spend a day in the city like you would in the resort then you will be very disappointed.

If you truly are adventurous, take the long way wherever you are going and take a swim in the lake and maybe a long afternoon playing in and around the water. Wife and kids enjoyed playing in the black mud kids thought it was a hoot that the mud smelled like farts and smearing it on their bodies - it made for great pictures. It was a little hard to find the good mud which seemed to only be in certain spots - as opposed to just the black sand that was everywhere.
The big complaint is - what on earth would possess a person to stop and spend time in this dump of an area? To sum up, if you are stuck in central eastern Washington in a campground or visiting relatives with no air conditioning, I highly recommend it. In it was and then after the war time ended so did it's "Hay Day". Nobody with money has ever come back to make something of what is undeniably true, the Lake is one of a kind and unique indeed. Yes it's a sleepy town but don't dislike it because there wasn't enough to entertain you on your visit.

There are a number of motels along the shoreline with easy access to the lovely waters of Soap Lake. There are rv camp grounds at least two I can think of and the motels are withing walking distance of downtown shopping as well.
