How many architecture students
An increase in numbers at undergraduate level therefore is nothing to worry about in my view, save whether the universities have the resources to maintain the quality of the education that they offer for increased student numbers?
The majority of these post graduates will go on to enter the profession. This would encourage a more diverse intake into the profession and perhaps encourage the schools to offer courses which are more closely tailored to the needs of the profession.

More importantly, the number of young UK citizens embarking on architecture degrees is about double what it was in This promises a bigger injection of new blood into the profession over the next few years. The numbers show almost 16, first-degree students, more than 7, post-grads and a further 1, or so other undergraduates studying architecture.
Set that 25, against the 41, ARB-registered architects and the potential supply of new recruits into the profession looks reasonably sound, even allowing for those who drop out or who take their skills elsewhere. The rise in number in recent years shadows rising activity in the construction industry and thus in work for architects.
The long-term trend in architectural activity is very much upward, as its share of the UK economy grows, and provides a strong case for increasing numbers of students. The great news is that the long-term need for architects, and therefore students, seems well established. However, growth is coming from outside the EU nations, as we see in Chart 3, which is not surprising given the influence of China. The number of overseas students from the EU has flatlined over this decade.
There were about 8, degrees awarded in architecture in Also in , there were about 19, medical degrees, 35, law degrees awarded, and , engineering degrees handed out. The most recent data I could find for architect graduates in was below 6, just as a reference point — that number seems to have dipped according to NCARB. The workforce numbers follow similar patterns as you might think.
The main difference I think is the large number in the healthcare industry, but that number was difficult to narrow down — you can see some of those breakdowns in the data images.
So this really follows the same pattern. Just a few notes here on our chosen profession of architecture. So you can calculate that into the workforce numbers. I am not placing any judgment on those numbers; I just think it is interesting to note. So are you still awake? Or has all this number-crunching made you sleepy? Well then, on to another set of numbers.
This one will possibly blow your mind, or maybe not …. Now I will not bore you with all the minutiae of this data and what it really means to the profession of architecture I will touch on it later but I will summarize.
Due to our numbers, and I dare say personalities, we are not a big player on any political scene when it comes to monies and clout. That is all well and good except for one thing. Others in our industry are big players in that arena. Features News Events Competitions. Jobs Talent Finder Active Employers. Schools School Blogs Forum.
